Motorcycles can be a blast, but unfortunately, there’s rarely a “minor accident” for a motorcycle rider. And with the summer season comes more bikes on the road. Whether you’re a rider yourself or know someone with a bike, we’ve got a few tips for riders and drivers to help prevent accidents:

For motorcyclists:

Make sure you’re prepared for a safe ride and look out for yourself on the road.

Attend a safety course. Learn something new or refresh your knowledge. Motorcycle safety courses cover things like what to do in tricky situations so you’re prepared with skills and good judgment.
Wear proper gear. Whether it’s state law or not, you should always wear a DOT-approved helmet. Other essential protective gear includes goggles (if your helmet is open-faced), a leather jacket, leather pants or chaps, boots and nonslip gloves.
Err on the side of caution. Don’t rely on your mirror at intersections and when changing lanes. Turn and look over your shoulder first. And always be on the lookout for gravel or other hazards.

For motorists:

Share the road with motorcyclists to help ensure everyone gets home safe.

Always double-check for motorcycles. A motorcycle is smaller than your vehicle, so it’s harder to spot when merging or changing lanes. Always double-check your blind spot. And when you’re making a turn, always look twice for approaching motorcycles.
Leave extra space on the road. Stay in your lane at all times — never try to share a lane with a motorcycle. Give them extra room when passing and maintain a safe following distance.
Use your turn signal. Always signal your intention to turn or switch lanes when there’s a motorcycle behind you, just as you would for another vehicle. Also pay attention to motorcyclists’ signals and slow down, leaving extra room between you and the bike.
